Charles Benedict Davenport (1866-1944),US eugenicist and biologist. Davenport became a professor of zoology at Harvard and was director of the Carnegie Institution's Station for Experimental Evolution (later Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory) from 1904. There he founded the Eugenics Record Office in 1910,published 'Heredity in Relation to Eugenics' (1911),and founded the International Federation of Eugenics Organizations (IFEO) in 1925. Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. Many eugenicists were criticised for their racist assumptions and plans for forced sterilizations.
