They were invented by English optical instrument maker,George Adams (1709-1772) in around 1770. These lorgnettes function to aid vision but were also fashionable accessories throughout the nineteenth century. The Bate patent lorgnettes (named after Robert Bate) were introduced in 1825,they included a spring action allowing the lenses to fold over one another to double up as a single lens.
