Jumping spider (Portia sp.),coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The jumping spider's eyes are especially well developed for an arachnid. In daylight, their main eyes (centre) are more acute than a domestic cat's. The other three pairs of eyes around the spider's cephalothorax (head section) are chiefly motion sensors. Chelicerae (the two appendages beneath the main eyes) house this spider's fangs. Magnification: x40 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
