Charles Carter Shepard (1914-1985),American microbiologist and former director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Laboratory Division. Shepard was internationally recognised for his work on leprosy and Legionnaire's disease. In 1960 he successfully grew cultures of Mycobacterium leprae,the bacterium that causes leprosy. In 1977 he discovered the bacterium Legionella pneumophila,that causes Legionnaire's disease. His work enabled scientists to test potential treatments and preventative measures much more quickly. He remained chief of the Leprosy and Rickettsia branch at CDC for over 30 years until his death in 1985 | |
