Internal fixation of fractured arm bones. Labelled artwork and corresponding X-ray of internal fixation of fractures of both the radius and ulna in a patient's right arm. The operation carried out was an open reduction and internal fixation of comminuted fractures (where the bone has broken into several pieces). Screws and a metal plate have been implanted across the main fracture in the radius to hold the broken bone in place, allowing it to heal in the correct alignment. A rod has been inserted inside the ulna, secured with an intramedullary nail at the distal end (left) and Kirschner wires (K-wires) and a cerclage wire (wrapped around the bone) at the proximal end (right) | |
