Detail of a polished slab of "Ocean Jasper",a type of chalcedony that was precipitated in a volcanic (rhyolitic) environment, this particular variety coming from a location in Northern Madgascar. Precipitation of the chalcedony in a characteristic rounded form in this rock accounts for its alternative and more scientific name "Orbicular Jasper". A void, left after the precipitation of chalcedony was completed, later filled up with crystalline quartz,as is often seen in geodes and agates. Actual size is 80 x 130 mm | |
