Blowfly (Calliphora sp.) maggot, light micrograph. This is the rear end of the larva of the blowfly. The two red structures are spiracles (air pores). Air diffuses into the spiracles and is carried around the body by a network of tubes called tracheae. Oxygen diffuses from the tracheae into the maggot's tissues and carbon dioxide leaves the tissues and exits the body. Magnification: x7 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
