Polarised light micrograph of plantain lily (Hosta sp.) stomata. Stomata are specialised cells in the epidermis of plant leaves that allow carbon dioxide (CO2) in,and water and oxygen out. The number of stomata on a leaf can be used to determine the atmospheric conditions a plant lives in. A high number of stomata indicates low atmospheric CO2,and a low number suggests high CO2. Each stoma is surrounded by a pair of guard cells (semicircular) that control their opening and closing. Magnification: x330 when printed 10cm wide | |
