Migmatite is a rock that could be classed as a metamorphic rock tending towards an igneous rock. It is formed when a metamorphic rock partially melts at greater subsurface depth, and then partially recrystallizes into an igneous rock. Migmatite is much similar to gneiss, which is however a strictly metamorphic rock, whereas in migmatite strongly folded, warped and mixed veins and layers of minerals indicate that partial melting has taken place. The darker bands in the rock consist of biotite and hornblende, while quartz and feldspar prevail in the lighter veins. Polished slab,35 x 52 cm | |
