Alexander umbel flower stalk. Light micrograph of a section through the umbel flower stalk of an Alexander (Smymium olusatrum) plant. This is a compound umbel, showing the primary umbel stalks (centre and radiating outwards) and the seven secondary stalks, each bearing a flower around the periphery of the section. There are four stalks, each with 5 ridges and 5 vascular bundles. They are all compound umbels with pedicles (stalks) leading to each minute flower (top left). There are 5 anthers (centre right) and 4 pollen sacs (red) in each flower. There are 5 sepals enclosing or opening the flower. The ovaries are 2-celled and each contains one ovule (bottom right and left). The minute styles are at the top of each ovary. Magnification: x5,when printed 10 | |
