Alexander fruit. Light micrograph of a section through a fruit from an alexander (Smyrnium olusatrum) plant. The fruit falls when ripe into two one-seeded parts or mericarps (pentagons, top and bottom),which may remain hanging from the central rod or carpophore (two stalks, brown) for some time. Each mericarp shows a characteristic pattern, with usually five ribs (costae),between which are furrows (valleculae, brown veins). In the thickness of the wall are oil ducts known as vittae. These oil-ducts are continuous with others, which run through all parts of the plant. When ripe they separate and flatten and the wind blows them away.
