Virginia meadow-beauty leaf. Light micrograph of a section through the midrib of a leaf from a Virginia meadow-beauty (Rhexia virginica) plant. This is a typical mesophyte leaf, with upper and lower epidermal layers (blue),a cuticle and typical stomata, found only on the lower surface. Under the upper epidermis is a layer of palisade mesophyll (violet) with chloroplasts. Beneath this is spongy mesophyll (blue red dots) with chloroplasts and large inter-cellular spaces. In the middle of the lamina is the midrib carrying one large vein surrounded by parenchyma cells (blue). Inside the top of the vein is the xylem (red) with large tracheid cells, whilst the smaller lower veins are surrounded by the phloem, with sieve tubes (violet-red cells) | |
