Medlar leaf. Light micrograph of a section through the midrib of a leaf from a medlar (Mespilus germanica) plant. This is a typical mesophyte leaf with an upper and lower epidermis (red),with trichomes (hairs),a thick cuticle (blue) and typical stomata (pores),found only on the lower surface. Under the upper epidermis are two layers of palisade mesophyll (red),with chloroplasts. Beneath this is a spongy mesophyll (blue-red) with chloroplasts and large intercellular spaces. In the middle of the lamina are small leaf veins (red-blue) and a single large vein (the horseshoe midrib) with thick-walled collenchyma (black-blue) and a ring of parenchyma (blue).
