Pair of faux tortoiseshell ear cornets with headband. These 'acoustic headbands' were used to aid those with difficulties in hearing. Each cornet acts as a sound collector: sound waves enter the wide end of the cornet and become amplified as they pass along the narrow channel of the tube and into the earpiece. The headband fits over the head and the tip of each earpiece fits into the ear canals of the wearer's ears. The amplification of the sound makes it easier to hear. These are made from celluloid and date from around 1910,England | |
