This coastal volcanic region consists of a caldera (mostly underwater) and numerous associated volcanic craters on land, hydrothermal activity, and regular small earthquakes. These are caused by the slow filling or emptying of the magma chamber (bottom, orange bulge) below the Gulf of Pozzuoli,in the north-western are of the Bay of Naples.
