Andre-Jaques Garnerin (1769-1823),French aeronaut, balloonist and inventor of the frameless parachute. In October 1797 he made the world's first successful parachute jump. It was made from a balloon above Parc Monceau in Paris at a height of about 1000 metres. Garnerin cut loose the balloon from the basket,to which the parachute was attached, and the umbrella-shaped,seven metre diameter parachute opened. Garnerin had a hard but safe landing. He went on to perform numerous more parachute jumps from balloons, giving exhibitions of parachuting in cities throughout northern Europe | |
