Elisa Garnerin (1791-1853). French balloonist and parachutist. She was the niece of André-Jaques Garnerin,French balloonist and inventor of the frameless parachute who successfully made the first parachute jump in October 1797. She learned to fly balloons at the age of 15 and following her aunt Jeanne-Genevieve Garnerin,became the second woman to make a parachute jump. She then pursued a professional career as an intrepid parachutist,making 39 descents between 1815 and 1836 in Spain,Italy,Russia,Germany and France. Elisa Garnerin was a remarkable business woman organising ballooning as a public spectacle at fetes and fairs.
