Pine cone tissue. Light micrograph of a section through a female cone of a pine tree (Pinus sp.) showing parenchyma (orange) and xylem (pink) tissues. The xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant. The walls of the xylem vessels are strengthened with lignin (spirals),a woody substance that helps to support the plant. The parenchyma are 'filler' cells in the soft parts of a plant. The cells have a thin and flexible cell wall and often a large central vacuole. They carry out a wide variety of functions including photosynthesis, storage of organic products, secretion and wound repair. Magnification: x180 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
