Healing using synthetic skin, artwork sequence. The sequence starts at top with a piece of synthetic skin covered with a silicone membrane placed on the damaged skin. In the second image (a few days later),fibroblasts and epithelial cells from the subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) have colonised the synthetic skin, restoring the dermis and its blood supply. The centre image shows the silicone membrane being removed after 14 days with the blood supplied fully restored. At lower centre, cells from the patient's epidermis start to form new tissue to cover the dermis. At bottom, the healing process is complete and the epidermis is fully restored | |
