Hydrogen gas production plant. 19th-century illustration of the large-scale hydrogen gas production plant of French engineer and balloonist Henri Giffard for his large balloon (5000 cubic metres) at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Four rows of wooden barrels contain sulphuric acid which reacts with iron to produce hydrogen. This passes along the tubes to the larger cylindrical vessel to be washed with water. The gas is dried in the taller cylindrical vessel. A glass-walled vessel containing a thermometer and a hygrometer checks the hydrogen's temperature and dryness. One cubic metre of hydrogen is made from 3kg of iron and 5kg of sulphuric acid | |
