Lid of a Dr. Gall phrenology snuff box dating from around the year 1820. It is French and made from pressed wood. Three skulls are depicted which are divided into twentyseven numbered sections. These sections relate to a corresponding list of twentyseven emotions on the underside of the box. Phrenology is a branch of pseudoscience in which the morphology of the skull is studied. Phrenologists believed the size and shape of the skull to be indicative of various emotional and character traits and of mental abilities. Dr. Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) is considered to be the founder of phrenology.
