Electro medical coil,in its case, alongside applicators. This apparatus dates from around 1890,England. Electric coils such as this one were used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism',to cure nervous diseases. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction,it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued until the early 1900s. Galvinism takes its name from Italian physiologist,Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals. Today, the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues is known as electrophysiology | |
