Grigg's conical electro-magnetic machine,in its case. The machine dates from around 1873,England. Devices such as this one were used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism',to cure nervous diseases. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction,it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued until the early 1900s. Galvanism takes its name from Italian physiologist,Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals. Today, the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues is known as electrophysiology | |
