Underside of a Dr. Gall phrenology snuff box dating from around the year 1820. It is French and made from pressed wood. Entitled 'Systeme des organes du Docteur Gall',twentyseven numbered emotions are listed. These relate to corresponding numbered sections on skull diagrams which are depicted on the lid of the box. Phrenology is a branch of pseudoscience in which the morphology of the skull is studied. Phrenologists believed the size and shape of the skull to be indicative of various emotional and character traits and of mental abilities. Dr. Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) is considered to be the founder of phrenology.
