Chladni plate wave patterns. 19th-century artwork of panels depicting wave patterns created on square plates. This method was developed by in the 1780s by German physicist Ernst Chladni to study modes of vibrations in rigid surfaces. Called Chladni plates, flour or sand was used to record vibrational wave patterns and modes of resonance. This artwork is from volume 1 of the 1847 edition of 'Pouillet's Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie' by German physicist Johann Heinrich Jacob Muller (1809-1875),based on an earlier work by French physicist Claude Servais Mathias Pouillet (1790-1868) | |
