This artwork illustrated a paper on discoveries at Pompeii,written by British ambassador to Naples Sir William Hamilton (1731-1803). Pompeii,in the Bay of Naples,was a Roman city that had been destroyed by a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was rediscovered in 1748.
