Torture chambers. 19th-century artwork of a dungeon,torture chambers and instrument thought to have existed at Nuremberg,Germany. Known as iron maidens,the purported existence of these devices and their possible history were described in a paper ('The Kiss of the Virgin') by British music composer and antiquarian Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795-1856). Pearsall described his researches undertaken in Germany in 1834 and 1835.
