Bubonic plague quarantine site. 16th-century artwork of a quarantine site set up to help prevent the spread of the Black Death (bubonic plague) in Sicily during an outbreak in the period 1575-6. Black Death outbreaks affected Europe from the 1340s to the 1700s. It is thought to have been bubonic plague, caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium and spread by fleas on rats. Millions died across Europe, but Sicily's Chief Physician Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia (1510-1580) put in place measures such as quarantine and improved public hygiene, measures that helped contain the outbreak in Sicily.
