Thames Tunnel,19th-century artwork. View of the tunnel interior. This was the world's first river tunnel for public use. The design was by Marc Isambard Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Construction (shown in C019/4622 and C019/4623) began in 1825 and the tunnel opened in 1843. It passed under the River Thames, linking the London suburbs of Wapping and Rotherhithe. The tunnel was 406 metres long and in parts only 4 metres below the river bed. It was originally used by pedestrians and to house shops. From 1865 the tunnel was used by trains and now forms part of the London Underground system. This artwork dates from 1828 | |
