Joseph Ritson (1752-1803),British antiquarian,writing at a desk. Ritson was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. A fierce and sometimes vitriolic critic of his contemporaries,he had a reputation for eccentricity. He main works involved editing collections of old songs,ballads,fairy tales,legends and romances,including those concerning Robin Hood. In September 1803 he went insane and died shortly afterwards.
