Salt evaporation ponds, near Ston,Croatia. These are amongst the oldest salt-producing sites along the coast of the Mediterranean. In the 14th century the city of Ston (visible in C019/4358) was fortified by a 5-kilometre long wall on the mountainside. The fortification was also a defence of the salt evaporation ponds. Salt is still produced here today. Water is moved from one basin to the next as the salt concentration increases. In the final ponds, the salt is harvested. Trolleys on narrow gauge railway tracks (one running across upper centre) are used to transport the salt to the storage depot for packing and shipping. Photographed in July 2013 | |
