Mount St Helens lahar area regrowth. View in 2001 from the south towards Mount St Helens,Washington State,USA. During the eruption of 18 May 1980,a large lahar (mud flow) originated from the south side of the volcano,destroying a large area of forest. The lahar was caused by snow and glacier ice melting in the summit region. The same area in 1988,shown in C019/4349,includes the first plants colonizing the lahar plain. By 2001,as shown here,the first coniferous trees had started to grow. Within a few decades the scar left by the lahar will no longer be visible | |
