Blast furnace. Restorers (lower centre) at the Hopewell Furnace,Union Township,Berks County,Pennsylvania,USA. Built in 1759,an air pipe from the blowing tube leads to a single tuyere in the lower portion of the archway. The small arched opening (top) is a vent for combustible gases. The boiler sent steam to the steam engine which operated the water wheel (not seen, off screen at right). Dating from 1952,this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
