Liquidambar fossil leaf. Rock containing a fossilised specimen of a leaf from the plant Liquidambar europaeum. The specimen measures 6 by 8 centimetres. Liquidambar plants first appeared in the Cretaceous and several species are still extant today. This specimen was part of the flora found in the region around Saint-Marcel d'Ardeche and Theziers in the Rhone Valley in southern France. It dates from around 5 million years ago during the Pliocene when the climate was warmer.
