Water on Jupiter. Distribution of water in the stratosphere of Jupiter measured in the infrared (66.4 microns) with ESA's Herschel space observatory's PACS (Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer) instrument. The data was superimposed on an image of Jupiter taken at visible wavelengths with the Hubble Space Telescope. A clear asymmetry is shown in the distribution of water, with more water in the southern hemisphere (cyan) and far less in the northern hemisphere (darker blue). A study has linked this observed distribution of water to the impact of the fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1994. Image published in April 2013 | |
