Electronic compound-eye camera. Close up view of a circuit board and artificial compound eye designed to mimic the structure of an insect's eye. The 'eye' comprises of 180 microlenses situated on the surface of a curved polymer base. Each microlens is connected to a silicon photodetector. The device is capable of taking low resolution digital images. Wide-angle compound-lens cameras could in future be used on surveillance equipment, unmanned flying vehicles and medical endoscopes.
