Electron microscopy water artefact, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is the surface of a compound eye from a bee. A compound eye consists of many rounded lenses known as ommatidia (hexagonal). The circular patterns (grey) are the result of not drying the sample correctly, resulting in evaporation of water from the surface of the ommatidia. Electron microscopy samples have to be dehydrated and then dried using critical point drying techniques to avoid this phenomenon. Magnification: x700 when printed at 10 centimetres across | |
