Military portable radio. US Army officer using a 'walkie-talkie',a radio field telephone, during military manoeuvres. This is an SCR-536 model, considered the first modern hand-held radio transceiver (both transmitter and receiver). Developed in 1940,it was originally designated a 'handie talkie',as opposed to the back-mounted SCR-300 model. This officer is commanding a unit of Airborne Infantry for the US Third Army, commanded by Lieutenant General Walter Kreuger. This set of training exercises, known as the Louisiana Maneuvers, took place in 1940 and 1941. Radio technology was first developed in the 1890s. Photographed by the US Army Signal Corps | |
