Fell mountain railway system. 19th-century artwork of a mountain railway based on the Fell system, developed in the 1860s by British railway engineer John Barraclough Fell (1815-1902). Unlike cog railways (which largely replaced this system),the third rail used for support while ascending an incline is smooth, rather than toothed. The trains passing up the incline use braking pads or wheels applied to this third rail to gain extra traction or to brake. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888 | |
