Appian Way. 18th-century artwork of paving stones on a section of the ancient Appian Way. This artwork is from 'Le Antichita Romane' (The Roman Antiquities) by Italian artist Giovanni Battista (1720-1778). This set of hundreds of etchings of Roman ruins was published in several volumes in the 1750s. The Via Appia is a Roman road that runs south for hundreds of kilometres from Rome to Brindisi.
