Aztecs surrender. Historical artwork of the last Aztec emperor,Cuauhtemoc, and his nobles (right) surrendering in the capital Tenochtitlan to Hernan Cortes (upper left) on 13 August 1521. This surrender,in the house of Aztacoatzin, marked the Spanish conquest of what is now Mexico. Behind Cortes is his translator,a woman named Malinche. This is a copy of panel 48 from the Lienzo de Tlaxcala,a 16th-century pictorial history of the conquest, produced by the Tlaxcalans,an indigenous people who had allied themselves with Cortes. The title is in Nahuatl. Artwork published in 'Homenaje a Cristobal Colon: Antiguedades mexicanas' (1892) | |
