Spider silk research. Golden silk orb-weaver spider in a laboratory being used for research on spider silk proteins. A thin strand of silk is visible emerging from the spider's spinnerets (centre). This research involves Nephila orb-weaver spiders. Spider silk has great strength and elasticity and this research is aimed at studying the genetics of spiders and their silk proteins to produce new silks. These new silks will be produced by genetically modifying other organisms such as plants, bacteria, and silkworms. This research is being led by Professor Randolph Lewis of the University of Wyoming,USA | |
