Model settlement of Saltaire. 19th-century artwork of buildings and factories in the town of Saltaire (near Bradford,UK),built by British industrialist and philanthropist Sir Titus Salt (1803-1876). Salt was a leading industrialist in the wool industry. In 1850,he decided to merge his mills on one site. He purchased several acres of land, and built his new mills complete with housing, bath houses,an institute of learning, schools, churches and a hospital. The whole, called Saltaire, was a self-contained working community offering accommodation and recreation far better than the city slums. This view is from the North.
