McClure Arctic expedition. 19th-century artwork of a scene from the McClure Arctic expedition sent to the Canadian Arctic's North-West Passage to find the lost Franklin expedition. This British Navy ship,HMS Investigator, was commanded by Robert McClure. Entering the North-West Passage in 1850,they explored the region and spent three winters trapped in the ice. This scene shows HMS Investigator on 20 August 1851,on the northern coast of Baring Island (later Banks Island). This artwork,by crew member Samuel Gurney Cresswell (1827-1867),is from his series of eight sketches of the voyage, published in 1854 | |
