Galvani's electricity experiments. 18th-century artwork of Italian physician and physicist Luigi Galvani (1737-1798) conducting electricity experiments, mostly with frog legs. The experiments and diagrams demonstrate the twitching effect of metals on frog leg muscles. Galvani is also experimenting with sheep muscles (far left). Galvani's experiments on frog legs started in the 1780s at the University of Bologna. Volta later showed that the electricity came from the metals, not the muscles. Artwork from Galvani's 'De viribus electricitatis in motu musculari commentarius' (Commentary on the Effects of Electricity on Muscular Motion,1792) | |
