Femoral vein in a case of pyaemia. 19th-century artwork of a coagulation of pus (green) in a femoral vein (of the thigh) in a type of septicaemia (blood poisoning) called pyaemia. The 23-year-old soldier (Ira Parker) had been wounded in his right calf by a musket ball on 19 September 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga in the US Civil War. He developed pain and fever in hospital on 1 October. The wound turned gangrenous and he died on 17 November.
