Water wheel in Nubia. 19th-century artwork of a Persian water wheel being used to raise water from the Nile to irrigate farmland in Nubia. Artwork by Scottish painter David Roberts (1796-1864) with lithography by Louis Haghe (1806-1885). Roberts had toured Egypt,Nubia,the Sinai,the Holy Land,Jordan and Lebanon in 1838 and 1839,producing a vast set of drawings and watercolours. This watercolour was published in 'Egypt and Nubia' (1846-1849). Nubia (now northern Sudan and southern Egypt) was then part of the Ottoman Empire | |
