Gail Borden (1801-1874),US inventor. Borden is most famous for his invention of the modern condensed milk process in the 1850s (patented 1856). His business expanded and by 1865 had become a major employer. It was known as the Eagle Brand Condensed Milk Company,and later as the Illinois Milk Condensing Company,then the New York Condensed Milk Company. Other inventions by Borden included a 'meat biscuit'. Borden County,Texas,USA,was named in his honour,as was the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin,Illinois,where his company had operated.
