Spinning wheel. 14th-century manuscript illustration of a man and woman next to a spinning wheel. This was a relatively new invention at the time, originating in Asia in the 11th century and being introduced to Europe during the Middle Ages. Spinning wheels are used to spin threads or yarn from raw fibrous materials such as wool and hemp. This illustration is from the 14th-century work 'Smithfield Decretals' (Decretals of Gregory IX),thought to have been produced in France (the text is Latin) and illuminated (illustrated) in England in around 1340 | |
