Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594),Dutch cartographer and geographer. In 1552,Mercator moved to Duisberg,Germany. In 1569,he developed a map of the world using a new kind of projection which now bears his name, the Mercator projection. Meridians of longitude were parallel instead of converging at the poles. This allowed navigators to plot their course as a straight line of constant heading, corresponding to a great circle on the globe. Mercator is considered the founder of modern cartography. This 1589 engraving of him measuring a globe is after a 1574 portrait by Dutch artist Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590). The Latin inscription gives the artist and year | |
